October Horror Films 2010 | Day 10 | A Nightmare on Elm Street (dir. Samuel Bayer; New Line Cinema/Platinum Dunes 2010)
Brief review: (We started this on 10/10 and finished on 10/11.) The hope I had (see day 16 here) for the remake of 1984’s Craven-helmed film proved to not be in vain. Like most/all remakes, this movie probably isn’t necessary, but that’s okay. A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010) is a worthy successor to the original. Robert Englund will always be Freddy Krueger, but Jackie Earle Haley does a good job in the role. I look forward to the inevitable sequels. This version of the character is pretty dark and probably more in-line with the original, before he began wise-cracking in the sequels. The writers did a good job of explaining his origin. The young actors are all good (and actually could almost pass for teenagers). We’ve seen it three times in less than six months (twice in the theater earlier this year, the second time in D-BOX - which was strange but kind of cool - and then we bought the DVD and watched it again the other day), so it’s safe to say I’d recommend its for fans of slasher movies and fans of the original Nightmare on Elm Street series.
Block: This was the second part of our second “slasher films” block, the “Wes Craven-related” block.
This is amazing.
