About Me

Steve Myles

This is a brief biographical sketch of me. See my résumé for more details.

Personal

I was born in Urbana, Illinois in 1978. I grew up in Lubbock, Texas and I currently reside in Houston, Texas.

In 1994, I became an Eagle Scout. Troop 543 represent.

In May 2004 (one week after graduating with my MS – May 23, to be exact), my lovely wife Elizabeth and I were married in Las Vegas, Nevada (at the Treasure Island hotel – I can’t recommend a Vegas wedding highly enough. Totally cool.) Liz is the coolest person in the world.

School

I attended Lubbock High School, graduating in 1997. I was the Vice President of my class during my junior and senior years. I then stayed in Lubbock and attended Texas Tech University, completing a BS in Industrial Engineering in May 2002. In May 2004, I completed an MS degree, also in Industrial Engineering at Texas Tech, specializing in Operations Research. In the summer of 2008, I started an online MBA program through the School of Management at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Professional

Since August 2004, I have been an Operations Research Analyst at Hewlett-Packard in Houston, Texas. I have worked as an internal consultant with HP’s customer contact centers and repair centers.

As a graduate student, I was a research assistant and a teaching assistant in the IE department. I worked on a research project related to inventory management of Pyxis machines at University Medical Center. This work was the basis for a presentation given at INFORMS 2007 in Seattle.

As an undergrad, I participated in a cooperative education program during the summer and fall of 2000. During that time, I lived in San Angelo, Texas, and worked as a Materials Management Coop at Ethicon, Inc.

Throughout my undergraduate and graduate careers at Texas Tech, I worked at Hastings. Check my résumé for descriptions of exactly what I did for that company.

Interests

My professional interests are primarily in product lifecycle planning, reverse supply chain management, call center operations optimization, inventory management, and healthcare applications of operations research. I am also interested in activity scheduling and discrete event simulation.

Otherwise, I am interested in movies (particularly horror and comedy, but pretty much anything) and music (working at a music store for seven years is to blame for this interest). I read a lot, too. I also like to run, though I’m not exactly what you’d call fast. I’m also an (extremely) amateur photographer.
